Feeding

February 12, 1998 (4).gif (102319 bytes)    English Boxwoods grown in good soil with ample organic matter do not need much fertilization. Indications of lack of nutrients include poor color and little or no new growth in the spring. A soil analysis is always recommended to determine the existing condition and needs of the soil. English Boxwoods prefer a pH between 6.5 and 7.2. If a soil analysis indicates fertilization is needed, apply the indicated amount around the base and drip line of the plant. Apply in late Fall after frost since root growth is promoted and not top growth. Avoid fertilizer on any bare roots or leaves of the plant. A slow release fertilizer is more beneficial since it feeds over a longer period of time.
