Avoid excavated fill dirt, soil that cracks, bakes, or is too heavy. These typically do not contain sufficient organic matter and do not drain properly or hold sufficient oxygen. Boxwoods flourish in partial shade but will grow in full sun. Avoid exposure to the early morning sun in winter since rapid thawing of frost-covered leaves will cause burning.
